Optic Atrophy Induced by Chloramphenicol.
نویسنده
چکیده
CHLORAMPHENICOL is an antibiotic that is used mainly for treating diseases caused by bacteria which are not sensitive to other, less toxic, antibiotics. Some of these diseases entail prolonged courses of treatment and the drug has to be administered for months or even years; the commonest diseases requiring prolonged treatment are subacute bacterial endocarditis, pyelonephritis, and fibrocystic disease of the pancreas. Haematological investigations are carried out periodically because of the danger of agranulocytosis and aplastic anaemia. A number of reports has now been received of optic neuritis occurring during chloramphenicol therapy. A further case is described below.

The distributions of mitochondria and sodium channels reflect the specific energy requirements and conduction properties of the human optic nerve head.
AIM To study the normal distributions of mitochondria and voltage gated Na+ channels in the human optic nerve head in order to gain insight into the potential mechanisms of optic nerve dysfunction seen in the inherited optic neuropathies. METHODS Five fresh frozen human optic nerves were studied. Longitudinally orientated, serial cryosections of optic nerve head were cut for mitochondrial enz...
متن کاملTHE SYNDROME OF DIABETES INSIPIDUS, DIABETES MELLITUS, OPTIC ATROPHY, DEAFNESS, AND ATONIA OF THE URINARY TRACT (DIDMOAD SYNDROME). TWO AFFECTED SIBS AND A SHORT REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
Two brothers with DIDMOAD syndrome are reported. The older brother has diabetes mellitus (type I), diabetes insipidus, optic atrophy, deafness and atonia of the urinary tract with severe symptoms such as diabetic ketoacidosis and frequent urinary tract infections. His younger brother had the same manifestations but with less severity. We report the findings of our two patients and compare ...
متن کاملNormal saline injection; a promising method to treat steroid-induced atrophy
Subcutaneous fat atrophy at the site of multiple injections can follow intradermal or intramuscular administration of steroids to treat inflammatory diseases. This condition takes several months to develop, and usually patients seek medical attention due to cosmetic deformities. Several methods, including fat transfer, filler injection and normal saline injection haven been proposed to tr...
متن کاملThe Hereditary Optic Atrophies
There are a number of hereditary conditions in which optic atrophy may be a feature. These include skeletal conditions such as cranio-stenosis, some of the phakomatoses, congenital glaucoma and so on. In these conditions the optic atrophy is the result of a fairly obvious mechanism such as optic nerve compression, the effects of intraocular pressure on circulation in the nerve head or optic atr...
متن کاملELECTRONIC LETTER OPA3 gene mutations responsible for autosomal dominant optic atrophy and cataract
H ereditary optic atrophy is a generic term that refers to a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders for which several modes of inheritance have been described. The most common forms of optic atrophy are autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA, OMIM 165500) and Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON, OMIM 53500). ADOA, which generally starts in childhood, is characterised by a progressive de...
